William Hammond Hall journal, 1 January 1865-22 February 1865.

Holograph journal. Living in Stockton, California with his parents and sister Mollie, Hall describes pruning roses, trimming grape vines, harvesting tomatoes, planting trees, and other gardening work on the family property; taking flute lessons and copying duets; studying Latin and Greek, and attending the Stockton Seminary and St. John's Protestant Episcopal Church; and, his social activities: playing card games, playing baseball, attending dances and concerts, duck hunting and visiting The Ark (a duck blind?). Many entries relate to activities with friends Billy Craig, Billy Austin, Miss Latimer, the Nicholsons, the Gasmanns. Hall devotes space in each entry to weather conditions, and often comments on the water level in the port. One entry describes the shipping of freight to French Camp in flat boats and barges. One long entry describes Hall, Weber and others fighting a fire in Stockton's Fremont Square. Hall's mother and sister make a one-month visit to Napa; George Tilghman's boat is stolen and later returned; Durand & Grissim move their laundry to the New York Hotel; Governor Low visits by steamer; Jack Keeler is discovered unconscious in the slough; Gustave A. Scott, organist for Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, performs in concert. Two entries near the end of the volume include calculations of profits made for cutting wood, and a possible record of gambling debts. A geometry problem ends the volume.
